Shalin Zulkifli marched on to semis in 2008 U.S. Women's Open Bowling Tournament!

Kim Terrell-Kearney of Dover, Del., and Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia advanced to the semifinals Tuesday at the 2008 U.S. Women's Open, a United States Bowling Congress event.

Terrell-Kearney defeated Diandra Asbaty of Chicago, 194-191, while Shalin Zulkifli defeated Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio, 266-194, as both winners moved on to Wednesday night's semifinals. The two players who will join them will be determined Wednesday afternoon.

In the night's second quarterfinal match, Zulkifli started with five consecutive strikes to pull away early and never look back against Woessner.

"I was a bit nervous in the first match because it was the first time I've been on TV in the States," Zulkifli said. "In the second match, I was a bit more relaxed and I touched up the surface of the ball I was throwing so that gave me a bit more room and allowed me to feel more loose."

In the Round of 16, Zulkifli defeated Tennelle Milligan of Costa Mesa, Calif., 192-178, while Woessner took out Kristal Wilson of Lawrence, Kan., 246-192.

All of the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and championship match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN. The telecasts begin Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. and continue for five consecutive weeks.

The government just announced a new reward scheme for the Beijing Bound athletes:

Gold Medal - 1 Malaysian Million ringgit
Silver Medal - RM300,000
Bronze Medal - RM100,000

This is for sure the biggest reward ever for an achievement in the olympic.

But I can't see any athlete capable of winning any medals except for the badminton team especially Lee Chong Wei and the Men's doubles pair.

But many believe Chong Wei is capable of breaking the jinx and upsetting the Chinese juggernaut, led by world number one Lin Dan and his compatriots Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin.

Nicol David successfully retained the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open Squash Championship title after thrashing arch-rival Natalie Grinham of Australia in the final at the Hollywood Plaza in Kowloon, today.

Nicol, currently the reigning World No.1, outclassed Natalie, the World No. 2, in straight sets 9-3, 9-5 and 10-8 in 58 minutes.

Nicol also took home a USD$12,819 (RM42,559) paycheck and also the winners Thropy for her effort.

SHARON Koh is doing great the Women's Masters at the Taiwan Open at the Twin Wood Bowling Centre, in Taichung yesterday. Sharon posted games of 227, 249, 214, 238, 222, 234, 214, 229 for a total of 1,827 pinfalls to take the lead.

The Malaysian men are also doing fine with Daniel Lim in second place with 1, 804.
He is followed by Zulmazran Zukifli (3rd-1,741), Aaron Kong (4th-1,729), Adrian Ang(6th-1,683) and Alex Liew (13th- 1,622).

Malaysian National darts team comprising 4 team members will leave for Amsterdam today to compete in the 16th World Darts Federation World Cup which begins on Wednesday.

The team comprise S. Selbaraju, 51, a veteran of five World Cup campaigns; Amin Abdul Ghani, 48, Keshminder Singh, 30, and Jasvender Singh, 38.

The team will meet South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Pakistan and Italy in the preliminary rounds, while the big four — England, the Netherlands,Finland and Wales — all represented by professionals, are once again expected to qualify for the semi-finals.

Sabahan, Josbert Tinus broke Mohd. Zaki Sadri’s long standing long jump national record with a leap of 7.88m. Josbert managed the jump enroute to take gold at the Thailand Open in Bangkok yesterday.

The Korat Sea Games-bound Josbert’s effort was 3 centimetres better than Zaki’s old record of 7.85m as he added to Malaysia earlier gold by Lee Hup Wei’s in the high jump with a jump of 2.15m, which is way off the national record.

ALL four Malaysians cyclist failed to complete the Under-23 World Championships road race in Stuttgart, Germany, yesterday.
Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi was the first of the dropouts when he crashed in the second lap. Loh Sea Keong, who dropped back to help Fauzan back to the bunch, found himself in no man's land. Fauzan and Loh had to retire. Joining them later was Rauf Nor Misbah, who fell behind and gave up with five laps to go in the nine-lap race.

This is a bad indicator for Malaysia since not finishing a race is not acceptable in an International race since we are suppose to be fully ready to compete till the end.

Alex, who steered A1 Team Malaysia to sixth in last year's championship, could only manage a poor 20th fastest time of one minute 53.773 seconds in the first practice session, before improving with 1:50.489s in the second session, which also ranked him 20th.

This also indicates a likely end to Malaysia's stranglehold on the 100m and 200m backstroke, which Keng Liat won in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Those were eight of a total of 14 Sea Games gold medals that Keng Liat won during his illustrious career, which he brought to a close after last year's Asian Games.

"I can't do it this time because I've not been training. If we had the back-up swimmers, it won't be so much of a problem, but that was not taken care of," said Keng Liat, 27.
Asum had been looking into the possibility of Keng Liat and freestyler Allen Ong coming out of retirement to boost the chances of the new 4x100m medley.

"This is not my fault. We should have been developing the back-up swimmers at least three or four years ago. But hopefully, Asum will start to realise now," said Keng Liat.

Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy, will be out to salvage whatever is left for him in today's Round Eight of the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series after spinning out of Race One in Magny Cours, France yesterday.

The Malaysian Cram Competition driver had gone to Magny Cours course with aspirations of another good run after strong outings in the previous two rounds of the championship. But luck seems to be not in his side from the first race.

Fairuz had started fourth on the grid after setting a third fastest time of one minute 26.039 seconds among the second batch of qualifiers.

But due to a heavy rain downpour, Race One lasted only three laps for Fairuz, as he became one of 20 non-finishers, no thanks to a slippery track.

MALAYSIA'S challenges in the Taiwan Open came to an end when the remaining men's doubles Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari and women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui crashed in the semi-finals yesterday.
Zakry-Fairuz, bidding to get their season back on track, apparently had not improved as Denmark's Top pair Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen handed them a 22-24, 21-19, 21-9 defeat instead.

Our women doubles, Pei Tty-Eei Hui came close to beating top seeds Chien Yu Chin-Cheng Wen Hsing before losing 23-21, 15-21, 21-18.

MALAYSIA'S challenge in the mixed doubles at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Yangzhou, China ended when Muhd Shakirin Ibrahim-Ng Sock Khim crashed out in the last 16 yesterday.
Shakirin-Sock Khim were beaten 7-11, 9-11, 4-11 by South Koreans Lee Jung Sam-Lee Eun Hee.

They were the only Malaysian pair to reach the last 16 as the other two pairs lost their matches earlier.

HONG Kong’s Rebecca Chiu denied Sharon Wee a title for a second time in a week when she won the women’s final of the Crocodile Squash Challenge Cup in Hong Kong yesterday.
World No 15 Rebecca followed up her NSC Tour 10 No 1 tournament win over Sharon in Kuala Lumpur last week with a 7-9, 9-4, 9-3, 9-2 triumph in 34 minutes.

Chong Wei Lift Japan Open Super Series 2007

Malaysia's singles ace Lee Chong Wei won the Japan Open title, his second crown in the Super Series, beating his arch-rival, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, in the final at Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo today.

Chong Wei, world number four and the only Malaysian survivor in the final, beat the 2004 Athens Olympics gold medallist, 22-20, 19-21, 21-19 in 65 minutes.

With their head-to-head records in favour of Taufik at 4:2, Chong Wei brushed aside all the criticism on his performance since losing in the third round of the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur last month.

Looks like Chong Wei played very well outside Malaysia, prooving he can beat the best in Japan and also recently in Indonesian Open. Chong Wei needs to toughen up his mentallity when playing in big tournament e.g World, Olympics, All England. But great job LCW, you have made the country proud again!.

Defending champion Lin Dan of China was sent home by Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the semi-finals of the Japan Open badminton tournament on Saturday. The 23-year-old world No. 1 Lin took an 11-5 advantage in the first game but tumbled to a 21-19, 21-15 defeat by the world number four.

What better story to start this blog than to report that Malaysian No 1 shuttler has beaten the world and defending champion Lin Dan of China in the Japan Open Badminton Tournament. Chong Wei is now scheduled to meet Indonesian, Taufik Hidayat in the Final today.
